That’s the challenge Alfred Bester sets himself in his unconventional cult classic The Demolished Man, the first novel to win the Hugo Award back in The Demolished Man was first published in and won the first ever Hugo award for best novel. I first read it as a teenager, but haven’t read.

What was up with the 50s? An Esper 3 can peep the conscious level of a mindcan discover what a subject is thinking at the moment of thought. Dick —and later Steven Spielberg—drew on a similar concept for Minority Report. Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, van Vogt, and not much else. Unfortunately, Bester falls into the trap, so pervasive at the time, in his treatment of women and minorities. A battle begins between peepers as Reich mzn his own to combat the invasive mind probes of the police detectives.
What happens here is that Bester directly laid down the ideas thread bare, without any effort at subtly building his world.
That there is nothing in man but love and faith, courage and kindness, generosity and sacrifice. The second lady that you meet in this novel is a shop girl that spends her whole scene trying to get the protagonist to “kiss her like he means it” “pout” The third lady that you alfrer in this novel is a ditsy esper 3, only invited to the party because of her looks. The mystery genre works extremely well with science fiction, and it may surprise readers to know that The Demolished Man is actually one of the early examples of that union of genres.

Dick, though of course Bester did it here first. Bester’s title was Demolition! It isn’t just that the only women in the book are just around to want the men, who are allowed to want other bwster besides the women. The Espers send each other images just like memes and see each others self-image like avatars.

Read this or his other classic The Stars My Destination and you will understand why I insist sci-fi readers should never neglect older science fiction. When we realize that he’s not really the lead though still supposedly admirableit’s only really to realize that there is no proper protagonist, as early interest and tension settle into an unexciting implausible police procedural, bster the reader already knows all the major points.

Tension, apprehension, And dissension have begun…. But too many things seem artificial, some things fall into place too conveniently, and the dialogues are plain pathetic. And so the computers of the future are still giant punch-card reading machines, albeit punch-card readers with innovative uses.
That’s not to say there’s nothing to like. He focuses on Reich, who tries to be casual, saying to Powell: In the context of its time I can understand some of the misogyny inherent in the portrayal of women, though I found it awfully difficult to wade through those passages.
