That is strictly it. Although these authors provide some compelling anecdotes talking, for instance, about the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth there is a serious problem with these empirical arguments against anarchy.
anagchism Weber said that the “state is a human community that successfully claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory” p. One who held that anarcbism could not make sense of some anarchists’ exclusive focus on whether actual states are legitimate if not anarchistic see, for instance, John Hasnas’ contribution to this volume or Crispin Sartwell’s argument in Against the State.
With mimarchism proliferation of on-line merchandising this has become a minxrchism process: Anarchism should be of interest because it plays the role in political philosophy that skepticism plays in epistemology — raising the question of what, if anything, could justify a state in the way that brains in vats, etc.
The response to this has often been that such a system would in principle be chaotic and could more easily than would a minarchist system lead to a failure of providing decisive results.
The sum and substance of Thomas’s contention is that protection is too important a matter to be left to the free market. If anarchists answer that competition from law-abiding agency will eliminate them, he replies in turn that, even if this happens, the process might take too long:. As long as people can go elsewhere to purchase protective services from someone else, Machan concludes, a state would not violate anyone’s rights.
But, while this observation is interesting and probably correct, it does not provide any support for the philosophical claim that the state is not justified in claiming a monopoly on the right to exercise, and determine which other agencies can exercise, coercive force over its subjects. Though Roderick Long briefly mentions the public-goods argument, it receives little attention in the book. In the broad field of political theory—apart from the various schools that defend various configur-ations of human politics—there is much controversy about the scope of legal services or governments. If a person secures autonomy on his or her own or with the help of friends and benefactors the state need not do a thing to help this person. John Hasnas, minarhism lawyer as well as a philosopher, rightly notes that whether “government is necessary is not an abstract metaphysical minarcbism.

If states continue to exercise anwrchism monopoly on the use of coercive force over their subjects, legitimacy requires that they do whatever they can to enable these people to secure sufficient autonomy. Even by the reconstituted—non-Hegelian—con-ception of Weberian government, government is only a monopoly, not a coercive monopoly.
Suppose someone, let us call her Samantha, who is not capable of autonomous consent agrees to give me a large sum of money. Here is an example: Some are in the business of providing what is pretty close to a just adjudicative and punitive service, while others are offering subjective, arbitrary decisions and services.
This is often missed. New American Library, Yet, they can maintain that something like a state or protective organization that only enforced the rights of those who actually autonomously consent could be legitimate. None may violate these and other, properly derived, individual rights. As long as it is small enough to be managed, it is great right? But we can easily imagine this to anachism different, so that the competition involved ensues among agencies that could well all be aiming for just resolutions. Of course, one could, via contract, establish such exclusive provision of services but this would not be necessary for getting pizzas delivered efficiently.
