: Boy Toy (): Barry Lyga: Books
Josh has not spoken to Rachel since, but now that graduation is drawing near, she reaches out to him. It’s awful for everyone. As the story starts to catch up to the present through a series of flashbacks, we’re hurled back in time to the night when this young boy did the unthinkable. This book was terribly convincing on Josh’s feelings of being trapped, confused, horrified, and wondering where to go after the incident, and it also shows that even when the incident happened years before – he continued to blame himself until he finally realizes the reality of what went on.
I say ‘pretty’ because character arcs are clearly not Lyga’s strong point, nor is emotional writing — Josh often told us that he had problems with x and barey, but I didn’t feel the kind of blazing emotional connection to him. Furthermore, I have a hard time believing that, even six years later, Rachel would be willing to start a relationship with Josh.
This book was disturbing, beautiful, awesome, amazing.
It’s like, we’re hardly taking this seriously. Josh did it because he was young and was in love with Barrry. Scanning is so much faster.
