Retrieved 10 December This led to the setting up of a Voice Browser activity and a working group to develop related standards. Statistical approaches offer a way out of the combinatorial explosion faced by AI, and I am excited by work in cognitive science on relevancy theory and the potential for applying statistical learning techniques to semantics, learning on the fly or from tagged corpora. I was a W3C Fellow from throughand have had a deep involvement with the development of key web standards sincee.

From February through JulyI was employed by Volantis as a Principal Researcher working on standards and proof of concept implementations in support of the company’s mission to provide multi-channel deployment solutions for Web-based services. This allows content providers to plug in different user interfaces as befits different devices, for example, voice browsers, cell phones, palm-tops, television and desktop machines. From toRaggett worked as a researcher at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Bristol, Englandwhere he pursued a variety of projects, including expert systems[3] hypertext[3] networkingWeb browsersand serversembedded systemsinteractive voice response systems.

The project is funded by the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme. W3C is seeking to unlock the potential of the Internet of Things and reduce its fragmentation.

The Ubiquitous Web seeks to broaden the capabilities of browsers to enable new kinds of web applications, particularly those involving coordination with other devices. Retrieved 17 June The Web has had a huge impact on how we exchange and access information. This workshop seeks to make it easier to monetize open Web applications, as an effective alternative to proprietary native app ecosystems.

For example, simple declarative expressions for calculated fields, a richer set of intrinsic data types including numbers, dates and times, simple ways to specify validation constraints, the ability to determine when a field must be filled out based upon the values of other fields, and similarly when a field or group of fields are irrelevant and can be hidden from view, and a simple means to support repeating sets of fields.

I recently organized and chaired the W3C workshop on authoring see the associated W3C news item The workshop focused on how the use of declarative techniques that capture the application developer’s intentions, rather than the exact means for how to realize them, could reduce the costs and improve quality for developing and maintaining Web applications.

The Semantic Web, with its ability to represent a World Wide Web of machine interpretable data and metadata, will give users tremendous flexibility for exploring huge amounts of information about companies and markets. Development of the browser was slow because Raggett was the lone developer and Hewlett-Packard, like many other computer corporations at the time, was unconvinced that the World-Wide-Web would succeed, and thus did not consider investing in web browser development.

Whilst I was working for HP Labs I developed a voice browser together with a student Guillaume Belrose to test out ideas for using context free grammars for more flexible voice interaction dialogs.

I am exploring techniques for combining statistical natural language processing, the Semantic Web and computational models from cognitive science. I launched the Model Based User Interface Incubator Group in October to evaluate research on model-based user interface design as a framework for authoring Web applications and with a view to proposing work on related standards. They also planned to add mobile support for multimodal services, but had to refocus due to a downturn in telecoms spending by mobile operators.

For more details, see my Google TechTalk from 1st February I have managed a number of Summer jobs for students with projects ranging from math on the Web, embedded browsers, voice browsers, and unified messaging. I organized a Workshop on declarative models of distributed web applications in Junein Dublin, Ireland, and plan to hold further workshops on related topics to guide W3C’s standards activities in these areas.

World Wide Web Consrtium. Some companies provide native applications that users can install on the smart phones, but this is not a panacea. HP had a convention that an employee could engage in related, useful, but not official work for 10 percent of his or her job time. This makes it challenging to create services involving devices from different vendors and using different standards.

The Internet of Things is a hot topic in technical circles with many potential domains of applications, for instance, home automation, security, healthcare, manufacturing, smart cities and lots more. Voice Browsers allow you to use spoken commands rather than having to press “1” for this and “2” for that etc.

The decision to implement a proxy server came after experience with implementing a binary Firefox extension for speech synthesis which I demoed at the W3C Technical Plenary in early A key ingredient in this, is the means to formally specify a document profile that defines what tag sets can be used together, what image formats, the level of style sheet support, which scripting libraries can be used etc.

This has included appearing as a factual witness in a US Federal court.

The result is expressed in XML and allows you to write definitions that extend earlier ones, but without the need to modify the definitions they extend. In addition, I have provided companies with assistance on several patent suits relating to early work on the World Wide Web. The following year, as a software developer in Hewlett-Packard’s Office Productivity Division, he worked on remote printing solutions. The result is now available for downloading as a plugin and standalone editing tool for the EzMath notation developed together with Davy Batsalle from ENST.
