That said, the story is about the relationship between Mitchell who loves Madeleine who loves Leonard. I would relate to it far better, I think, because I’m kind of revolted by the ways these characters try to be different. However, later in the story she says the real one and when her boyfriend carries it out, she reaches orgasm bigtime.

I didn’t dislike them, but I didn’t attach myself to them as much as I should have. Part of the issue was the characters were just “so so” for me. I feel like the main eugemides of this novel is just Eugenides shouting, ” look how many books I’ve read!
Most of it just comes off as pompous. Henry James would approve. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Or, I dunno, Middlemarch?

This book is so much better and so much bigger than this summary–it’s a story of trying to grow up but not necessarily succeedingof academia, of inequality between the sexes, of class hte gender stratification, of the absurdities of literary theory in the face of literary substance, of the rise of greed in that decade, and so much more.
It also manages to be worse than Eugenides’ other waste of paper, The Virgin Suicides. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Where could you find the marriage plot nowadays? The presentation of Mitchell, especially, eugenidew so uncertainly poised between solemn and mocking that it’s impossible to tell whether his gestures — hanging te cross round his neck, intoning the Jesus prayer — are intended as those of marriahe earnestly agonised truth-seeker or marriaage a slightly narcissistic sap.

I can’t knock it for intelligence.
Perhaps it’s just that the elements I liked in this novel didn’t add up to a cohesive w I loved The Virgin Suicides for its style, imagery and voice. Although the five blonde virgin girls were archetypal, he bent the very signifier of archetype with great marriwge and paradox.
I just eugeniides gotten around to it yet. Her suitors, Mitchell and Leonard seem to have a little more to them, Leonard more so – his section is where the book finally gets going.
He is this good! His mood disorder was hammered relentlessly, though, and left nothing for the reader to imagine, which made it difficult to comprehend his charm, or relate to his illness, which karriage became stale. But despite making many a year-end best-of list and literary award-nominated, it almost as quickly tumbled down my list as heard very mixed things about it including the inevitable “not as good” as Middlesex.
