In the search and its aftermath, Zora must come to terms with her ideas about security, independence and motherhood. She explores the bearable, producing a truly nice story, modest in all senses of the word. As people lined up in front of the cinema that showed American movies, a mosque across the street broadcast a sermon warning people against worldly pleasures such as seeing movies.

The novel was written in and is set in pre-revolution Iran.

Review Conveys the texture of extended family, the stress of modernization, the strain of Moslem rigidity as well as the harmony of nature, of dust and carpets, fruits, sweets, tea, fine rice and gossip. In “Persian Girls, Rachlin chronicles her choices and those made by her sisters, foreibner mother and her aunts, throwing the door to her family’s home wide open.

Feri has returned to Iran to visit her family. Books by Nahid Rachlin. I had just arrived, and yet it seemed that I was the one she was complaining about, as if I had somehow tipped the scales and now she had far too many children. A well-written and thoughtful novel. Overall, I think the story jus I flew through this short read and nhid was not very impressed with the character development.

The voice is cool and pure. Married to a Stranger. Through the window I saw a white chador with polka dot design in the distance. A woman was sitting in a shady corner of the courtyard holding a glass of lemonade with ice jingling in it.

This is a beautifully written book. But her portrait of the artist in an Islamic country on the verge of dramatic change is filled with light. On the face of it, this is a story of a women in transition, pulled to her homeland at a time of personal flux. I loved this beautiful and so very froeigner sentence which I quote: Rachlin’s characters face each other across a gulf of irreconcilable differences, but she shows them to us with their complexity and dignity intact, their deepest needs as recognizable to our own.

The style is evocative of a foreign culture and place, but draws you in in a manner that is inviting while maintaining mystery and awareness of difference.

In addition, readers are given insight into the values and customs of a culture that many do not know firsthand. It was all so painful and confusing that tears collected in my eyes and streamed down my face. I did think that some aspects of the story were a bit predictable, but enjoyable none the less.
