The concept of ‘chicken little’ had remained with me for thirteen years since my first read and it’s still just as creepy and memorable now. Earth is severely overpopulated, polluted and short on resources, including ferderik water.
Definitely recommended to readers who want to be well versed in sci-fi history. And yes, one certainly feels that he knows what he’s talking about when reading this. Unfortunately, Venus is an inhospitable planet with very high temperature and uncomfortable climate.
I assume it must be transparent because no reader here seems to question. As far as I can tell we only have Kathy’s word on it.

The style is dense or compact if you will and much is packed into each paragraph. This was a reread of one the books that first got me into science fiction and it was totally worth rereading all these years later.

Introduction According to Frederik Pohl, one of the most significant literary collaborations in the history of the science fiction field got its start due to deadline pressure. Set merchhants in the 22 nd century, corporations have gained enough power to force political bounds to shift from the geographical to the commercial.
The whole point of the book is to demonstrate how bad life could become if businesses had more power than government.
Never have I read such a marvelously plausible work of Science Fiction. A similar situation, if you like, but with a capitalist society taken to the extremes rather than a socialist one. At least I thought it was satire, it seems more like documentary now….
If anything, many of the issues in the book resonate more today than they may have when it was first published. His target was not always Man in the abstract and general. The protagonist, Mitch Courtenay, is a star-class copywriter in the Fowler Schocken advertising agency who has been assigned the ad campaign which would attract colonists to Venus. I loved this novel. I can kiss your ass better than he can.
