Saramego references events, writers, and historical by name and with little context for the uninformed. I love Saramago and I wanted to learn more about Portugal. I’m enjoying his writing style, his point of view, and his personality, but I’m finding that this is not a book for someone new to Portugal, its history, or its culture.
