My only gripe is that the book ended with mgebound obvious need for a sequel. Started out well and the writing was consistently competent, but the story never went anywhere — just around and around in circles. Hell, I’m probably better off dead. And finally, although I’m not too magebkund of misogynistic evil-woman-standing-between-the-greater-love-of-two-men cliche in many homoerotic romances, I hope some antagonists the rapists, for example get a dose of karma in future installments.

I wish more will be published someday Compare this to the excellent “Persian Boy” which is also narrated by a mistreated slave but actually manages to portray two human souls in a way that makes it very iatica to believe that these weren’t the real Alexander and Bagoas.

I’ll definitely read the next book Spellwrought which came out earlier this year, after a 6 year gap. He glances at the stone, still flashing in the palm of my hand, and then sets the bottle down. My eyes dart from the village, half a mile away, to the scattered farmhouses in the valley below, to the sparkling ribbon of river winding through the valley and down to the bay, and then to the wide dirt road heading east along the edge of a rocky headland.
It marks us as slaves and keeps the crawlies off our heads. I liked quite a few things about this book.
